Learning aims
1.To learn the new words: celebrate, guess, ghost, dress up as, mooncake, Christmas, festival, because, present, together, full, USA.
2. Can talk about the reasons of their favourite festivals and how to celebrate these festivals.
3. To know the history of Halloween and other festivals
 
Teaching difficulties:
1.      How do people in the world celebrate these festivals?
2.      What people eat and how they dress up.
 
 
Teaching procedures:
Step1. Leading in
T: Today is our School Open Day. It’s a special day. Next let’s look at another special day.
1. Play a video for the students, the name is the story the Spring Festival Eve and ask the students some questions.
 1) Is it very funny?
  2) Which festival is it?
2. T: Do you know other festivals?
 (Let them look at the pictures of dumplings, mooncakes, and chocolates.)
 Learn the new words above and have students tell the festivals in order:
at Chinese New Year,  at Mid-Autumn festival , at Christmas.
T: Today we will learn some Western and Chinese festivals.
Step2. Presentation
1.      Show the pictures and a video of Christmas .
2.      Talk about the six festivals
To conclude what people eat and do at the six festivals.
Mid-Autumn Festival
eat mooncakes enjoy the full moon   have a big dinner   tell the story of Chang’e
Chinese New Year
get some money   wear new clothes      watch lion dance   let off fireworks
Halloween
dress up   make and light pumpkin lantern     play a game “trick or treat”

Step3. Speaking
1. Millie and Tommy are talking about their favourite festivals.
 Ask and answer some questions:
 1) Which is Tommy’s favourite festival? Why?
   Christmas. Because he can get many nice presents at Christmas.
2) What festival does Millie like? What do they do on that day?
   Mid-Autumn Festival.                      
All the family members get together, have a big dinner, eat mooncakes and enjoy the full moon.
2. Ask students to make a dialogue to talk about their favourite festival, use the conversation on Page 57 as a model.
3. Choose some pairs to act the dialogue out.
Step4. Other festivals  
1. A guessing game
Let each group chooses on number, which there is a description linked to it.
1) We often eat lots of nice food and wear new clothes. Children can get some money and play games. People often say Gong He Xin Xi to each other.
It is the second Sunday in May. It is a special day for mothers to relax(放松).
2)Some mothers get flowers or cards on this Day.                                                  Some families go out to lunch or dinner. 
3) On that day,Chinese people often eat rice dumplings and watch Dragon Boat Races.
4) On that day , people celebrate the harvest (丰收). Families often get together and have a big dinner. The special food is a turkey.
5) On the day we usually give them cards to show our thanks. We thank them for helping us when we are in trouble, and we thank them for teaching us how to be a real man.
6) On that day , families often get together and eat mooncakes and enjoy the full moon in the open air.
Ss guess what it is.

4. T: Now, you have known something about the festivals. Please talk with your classmates and complete the table in the paper.
 (Students discuss and complete the table.)

5. In a group of 7 students, students have a competition. Each group act how people celebrate one festival, one of them explain.
Step5. Listening
1.      Listen to the tape and answer questions.
T: Today, we are going to learn Unit 3 Let’s celebrate! It talks about festivals.
At first, listen to a dialogue between Eddie and Hobo.
They are talking about a special day.
Now, listen to the tape carefully. After listening, answer 2 questions.
(1). What’s the special today?(今天有何特别之处?)(Today is Halloween.)
(2). Are Hobo and Eddie happy?(Yes, they are.)
2. Read the dialogue after the tape and answer another 2 questions.
T: Very good. Now, please open your books and turn to P.38. Read the dialogue after the tape. After reading, answer 2 questions.
(1). What is Hobo dressing up as?
(2). What will he dress up as then?
T: OK, read it after the tape.
Well, who can answer me?
Ss answer.
T: Very good. Read the answers together.
3. T: Well. Who can translate this dialogue?
4. T: Let’s look at one phrase.
dress up (as)   装扮(成)
万圣节,汤姆经常装扮成一个鬼。
At Halloween, Tom often dresses up as a ghost.
这个女孩有时装扮成白雪公主(Snow White.
This girl sometimes dresses up as Snow White.
5. Read the dialogue in pairs. And after several minutes, invite some pairs to act for the students.
Step6. Extension
1.      Have students choose one festival to make a plan to celebrate it.
2.      Work in groups and discuss what they should prepare for the celebration and what they can do.
3.      Kerae also has a festival called Dragon Boat Festival, they say that’s their own festival, not Chinese. What can we do to protect our Chinese traditional festivals?
(To make posters to tell children about our traditional festivals./ To celebrate them./ To …..)
Step7. Homework
1.To finish Period 1 of Unit5 in the workbook.
2.Try to remember the useful phrases and expressions.
